The META Description Tag usually consists of 25 to 30 words. The META description usually shows up in many search engine results as a summary of your site.
Directories like Yahoo! and the ODP (Open Directory Project – dmoz.com) show the page title and description that you entered (and the editors modified) on their manual submission form.
Make sure your META Description Tag is relevant to the content on the page, because some search engine looks for META Description Tag to know what your website about. If you are using wordpress, I suggest you to install Meta Description Plugin.

Meta descriptions are usually 165 characters long and I would say its a must that you enter meta descriptions each time you make a blog post because a good meta description might prove to increase your click through rates in search results.
