Joomla CMS

Joomla is a free open source content management system (CMS) for publishing content on the internet and intranets. You can develop the CMS to make intranets application using the ‘component’ at Joomla. The system includes features such as language internationalization, pools, printable versions of pages, news flashes, latest news, website searching, etc. You can use ‘component’ and ‘module’ for the feature. Joomla is licensed under the GPL, and is the result of a fork of Mambo by the development team on August 17, 2005. It is written in the PHP programming language and uses the MySQL database by default.

This year, Joomla took the runner-up prize in the categories of Best Overall Open Source CMS Award and the Best PHP Open Source CMS (tied with CMS Made Simple). This results in a total prize winnings of $3500 to the Joomla Project.

Joomla has one big thing going for its CMS, and that’s the community. The community is HUGE. Tons of people are using Joomla now and updates for modules come out every day.

However, I’m not a big fan of the CMS itself. The interface isn’t clear and there’s just too much hacking involved if you want a custom design. I wish it was a a whole lot simpler.

I’d recommend CMS Made Simple for smaller website. It has a huge update coming out soon. Highly recommended.
