Check domain history before buying domain

Before you bought any domain, you should check the domain history whether it is dropped before or not. What is a dropped domain anyway? A dropped domain is a domain name that was previously registered but was not renewed by the domain owner. There are several reason for this. The owner might forgot to renew the domain name or the previous domain owner did not want to renew the domain. If the domain is banned, the previous owner might not want to renew it. He might used it for spamming. If the domain has been banned, the search engines will not list your website and you will not get any or little traffic from Search Engine.

Before you buy you can check it’s history at the Internet Archives’ Wayback Machine. Type in the domain, and you can check if it has been previously dropped. You can also find the age of a domain there.

Hi Developerholic, I'm the new owner, Ivan :) Yeah - it's fun... and important! You just don't want the past to haunt you and your website :) One of the place to buy established domains is Godaddy TDNAM aftermarket - I bought several good domains (and one, JBOMB.COM, is 8 years old when I bought it last year - Old is better in Internet :P )

Bhanu, You can always check archive.org for domain history.

Just a note regarding Archive.org; if you make a robots.txt file in your root directory and put this in there it will not mirror your site:

    User-agent: ia_archiver
    Disallow: /

It will also stop allowing lookups of your domain’s history as long as this robots.txt file exists.

well archive.org is really useful but lately more and more websites disallow the archive.org bot to crawl their sites.
i recommend doing some major checks ( inlinking sites / history /g00gl3´s cache) before u reg a domain.

Yeah... It's hard today to learn the history of a site - It's an important feature and a great tool to do our due diligence in buying a website.

I never thought that there’s a way to check the history of every domain. It’s very useful to people who are very much interested in acquiring domains for their online business. In this way, they can minimize the possibility of getting a bad domain name.

The more the domain is older the higher its price. So if you wanted to buy a domain, you better check how many years is that particular domain.
