I've found the best way is advice from someone who knows what they are talking about. But the article is correct. Due diligence is required - check for all the standard features and uptime and especially good support. But if a friend has had a good experience with them, that's the best indicator.

Hi,

Yes, I agree - I also look for testimonials and reviews from forums about a web hosting, as deciding from the visual presentation is often misleading these days - Many low budgeted site owners are indeed running their web hosting business on their slippers while having a top-notch web design, designed by a 'cheap' but high quality freelancer.

It's challenging to be a client, these days :)

Personally the first think that I notice for a web hosting company is their web design, the presence of an uptime guarantee and finally price/features ratio. If the web hosting firm is offering unlimited plans I try my luck to somewhere else. I don’t like lies, and as many of you know, there is nothing unlimited. Also, I am searching for testimonials, reviews and criticism from present and former clients. If a web host is large enough and has many years on the field believe me you will notice it. Most of the small fries have a poorly designed website, their response times are extremely long, they lack basic php knowledge and in most of the cases they run their “business” from their bedroom :).

One of the best way to check on providers is to visit a mass comparison website. Finding one trustworthy can be hard since most just build a website without any real knowledge of the providers. They rarely test the providers personally. But once you find a good one you can get educated really quick as to what companies are doing a good job.
