5 ways to choose a web hosting

One of the most critical component of your website is your web-host. Imagine if your website is down for an hour, how much traffic will it dissapear? How much revenue lost? Here you can learn how to choose a good hosting with good price:

  1. check for their infrastructure. With poor infrastructure, they can offer low prices. Consequently, their service is low and quality of services being delivered. Highly skilled customer-service costs money. You can send email to them, and see how they answer. You usually will know if they are good or not.
  2. Check for reliability and speed of access. They should guarantee its uptime (the time when it is functional). Look for a minimum uptime of 99%. The host should provide some sort of refund if it falls below that number, although it is hard to claim them.
  3. Check for restriction, like restrictions on their users, number of domains, bandwidth limit, maximum file size limit, FTP access, email account, and database limit. You must know your requirement before signing up for a hosting package.
  4. Check for contract. Read the terms of service carefully before you sign-up with the webhost. You do not want them to charge you more when your website is getting popular. See if there are any hidden cost. Ask them if they will charge excess bandwidth and space, and cost of upgrading an account.
  5. Check if they are reseller of other hosting companies. The disadvantage of using a reseller is the possibility that you are dealing with people who don’t know much about the business they are selling and could not give fast and good support. However, this also depends on both the reseller and the underlying hosting company. So you need to check again, ask them questions about their hosting.

One of the best way to check on providers is to visit a mass comparison website. Finding one trustworthy can be hard since most just build a website without any real knowledge of the providers. They rarely test the providers personally. But once you find a good one you can get educated really quick as to what companies are doing a good job.

Personally the first think that I notice for a web hosting company is their web design, the presence of an uptime guarantee and finally price/features ratio. If the web hosting firm is offering unlimited plans I try my luck to somewhere else. I don’t like lies, and as many of you know, there is nothing unlimited. Also, I am searching for testimonials, reviews and criticism from present and former clients. If a web host is large enough and has many years on the field believe me you will notice it. Most of the small fries have a poorly designed website, their response times are extremely long, they lack basic php knowledge and in most of the cases they run their “business” from their bedroom :) .

Hi, Yes, I agree - I also look for testimonials and reviews from forums about a web hosting, as deciding from the visual presentation is often misleading these days - Many low budgeted site owners are indeed running their web hosting business on their slippers while having a top-notch web design, designed by a 'cheap' but high quality freelancer. It's challenging to be a client, these days :)

I’ve found the best way is advice from someone who knows what they are talking about. But the article is correct. Due diligence is required – check for all the standard features and uptime and especially good support. But if a friend has had a good experience with them, that’s the best indicator.
